The rescue archaeological excavations of 2022, in the school yard of the village, for a public development project, have confirmed and completed the information about two habitation layers and a necropolis (191 inhumation graves, W‑E oriented), located in the eastern area, outside the walls. The contribution includes preliminary considerations about the cemetery, with an overlook on a triple burial complex, analysed in the context of the Christian graveyards of the Middle Byzantine Dobrudja. GABRIEL VASILE, FRANCESKA ŞTIRBU, Anthropological Analysis of the Squeletal Remains from a Triple Burial Tomb, dating back to the Middle Byzantine Period at Nufăru – School Yard, Tulcea County DOI 10.59277/SCIVA.2022-2023.02 Full text Abstract Show more ANTHROPOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE SKELETAL REMAINS FROM A TRIPLE BURIAL TOMB DATING BACK TO THE MIDDLE BYZANTINE PERIOD AT NUFĂRU – SCHOOL YARD, TULCEA COUNTY Recent preventive archaeological excavations carried out in the courtyard of a local school in the village of Nufăru have led to the documentation of a Middle Byzantine inhumation cemetery comprising 191 funerary complexes. Among the individual burials, which are exclusive within the cemetery, our attention was drawn to a multiple burial containing the skeletal remains of three individuals: two adult females (a young adult ‑ approximately 34.6 years old, and a middle adult – approximately 43.3 years old) framing the skeleton of a subadult. The skeletal remains of the subadult belong to a child of approximately 10.0 years old. Beyond the issues raised by this less common practice in the Dobrudja funerary archaeology landscape regarding burial rituals, determining the cause of death for these three individuals becomes essential for the anthropologist. In the case of the middle adult, death most likely occurred due to a blow inflicted with a sharp object, such as a sword, in the cervical region. However, the situation is not as clear regarding the other two deceased individuals. Several atypical pathognomonic manifestations (hypervascularization and resorptive lesions on the bodies of all vertebrae, except for the cervical ones) observed in the child’s skeleton seem to indicate an infection with one of the species of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. These macroscopically observed changes need to be confirmed by genetic analyses. As for the cause of death of the young adult, it remains a mystery despite numerous osteological (cribra orbitalia, osteoarthritis, spinal disc herniation, periostitis, vertebral compression fracture, osteomas, osteochondritis dissecans) and dental (caries, dental calculus, dental enamel hypoplasia, ante‑mortem tooth loss, congenital absences) pathological changes noted. Other pathological manifestations identified in the case of the middle adult include: cribra orbitalia, caries, dental calculus, dental abscesses, ante‑mortem tooth loss, congenital absences, osteoarthritis, spinal disc herniation, periostitis, Colles’ fracture, and osteochondritis dissecans. NEW DATA REGARDING THE ARCHITECTURAL EVOLUTION OF THE CHURCH IN THE LIGHT OF THE 2021 ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH The Calvin Reformed Church from Rapoltu Mare is one of the important ecclesiastical monuments af Hunedoara County, that draws the attention and interest through the shape of the sanctury (with axial closing) and the murals dated în the 14th and 15th centuries. In our paper, we present the results of the archaeological research of church undertaken in 2021 as a preparation of the renovation and drainage system at the north and western sides. We have also examined the historical and art‑historical literature, focusing on its transformations down the centuries. The archaeological excavations evidenced that the nave and the sanctuary of the church were built in the same phase, together with the sacristy in the 14th century. A tower bell was built on the west side of the nave, on a later construction phase, but before 1523. One of the most important finds is that the church is succeeding a stone building, most likely a previous place of worship, probably built in the late 13th century. Over the course of the research, 39 graves with 40 deceased were discovered. The cemetery can by dated between 13th and late 17th centuries. SEBASTIAN OVIDIU DOBROTĂ, Smoking Pipes and Paraphernalia from the Recent Archaeological Investigations in the Evangelical Parish Church in Sibiu DOI 10.59277/SCIVA.2022-2023.04 Full text Abstract Show more SMOKING PIPES AND PARAPHERNALIA FROM THE RECENT ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS IN THE EVANGELICAL PARISH CHURCH IN SIBIU Archaeological research in the field of smoking pipes has advanced in recent years by leaps and bounds and published data from the city of Sibiu (germ. Hermannstadt, hu. Nagyszeben) have also provided several such finds. The following paper brings a new contribution to this field of research by presenting the smoking implements archaeologically uncovered inside the Evangelical Parish Church in Sibiu – nowadays the Evangelical Cathedral – during the 2018–2021 excavations, better known for their results relevant to the medieval and early modern development of the parish site and of its buildings. The thirty smoking pipes which will be discussed date from a much later period, the earliest being only as old as the second part of the 17th century and the vast majority dating from the first half of the 19th century. For their most part fragmentary pieces drawn in the backfills used for vertical resurfacing during the 1853–1855 renovation of the church, the lot includes a varied selection of 17th–19th centuries “Ottoman” pipes and 19th century “Austrian” pipes, some of them produced in Wiener Neustadt (Austria), others connected with the workshops in Banská Štiavnica (Slovakia). The presented lot also includes two fragmentary wind caps and a bronze pipe cleaner, also found inside the church, in secondary contexts. The materials are analyzed both individually and as an interconnected lot. For the description of the pieces the basic terminology has been used, dividing them into bowl, shank and ring, with occasional mentions about the lower part of the bowl, designed as their keel. It consists of 14 metal adornments: two neck‑rings and two bracelets made of thick wire, two double‑wired open bracelets, six double‑wired head ornaments, a decorated disk and an indeterminate fragmentary item – possibly a needle. Most likely, the ensemble as a whole is a Central European import; good correspondents are to be found in Nitra and Únetiče, cultural environments. The paper also discusses the origin, chronology and significance of this hoard, within the context of the Middle Bronze Age in Eastern Romania. Table Supports in the Shape of Heracles’ Club DOI 10.59277/SCIVA.2022-2023.06 Full text Abstract Show more MARBLE AND LIMESTONE FURNITURE FROM HISTRIA (I) TABLE SUPPORTS IN THE SHAPE OF HERACLES’ CLUB The article publishes a series of marble and limestone fragments in the shape of Heracles’ club. With one exception, which may belong to a statue representing the hero, they most likely functioned as table supports. However, considering the versatility of the columnar type of support, its use for vessels cannot be ruled out. Two limestone pieces show evidence of their function as supports. The earliest piece has an analogy at Delos, and dates back to the Hellenistic period. But most of the supports in the form of knotty clubs from Histria are most probably of Roman period. For the two limestone pieces the execution suggest a date in the late Roman period. A series of examples attest the wide spread of this type of support in the Italic (Ostia and Pompeii), Aegean (Imbros, Delos) and Pontic (Chersonesos) areas. Originally inspired by the iconography of Heracles, the motif of the knotty club in the stone furniture is not exclusively related to his cult. Although there are no data for the finding contexts, the up mentioned cases points to the popularity of this category of furniture in Histria. RENATA-GABRIELA TATOMIR, An Egyptian fragment of sarcophagus in the collection of the “Vasile Pârvan” Institute of Archaeology Full text Abstract Show more AN EGYPTIAN FRAGMENT OF SARCOPHAGUS IN THE COLLECTION OF THE “VASILE PÂRVAN” INSTITUTE OF ARCHAEOLOGY On January 22, 1862, General Nicolae Mavros donated to the Elective Assembly of the United Principalities a very large and diverse collection of antiquities, as well as extremely valuable from an archaeological, historical and cultural point of view. This collection also included a small sub‑category of Egyptian pieces, which, along with scarabs, statuettes, fragments of mummies, and other artifacts, contained a fragment of a sarcophagus with a hieroglyphic inscription. The first description of this artifact dates from 1902 and belongs to Gr.G. Tocilescu, the one who described its medium as granite. Based on the information provided by the Viennese Egyptologist Jacob Krall, Tocilescu presents the name of the deceased as Peti[a]tum, incised in hieroglyphs on the sarcophagus. With respect to the information provided by the text, he notes that it contains part of the type of funerary literature called the Litany of the Sun, which he briefly describes on that occasion. Regarding the fragment from Bucharest, however, Tocilescu points out that it contains only half (the upper part) of the first 23 praises to several deities. Then, mentioning the title of É. Naville’s translation from 1875 of the Litany of the Sun, he provided, on the basis of the latter, a full reading of the text – yet with a translation from the French language, according to the mentioned variant, and not directly from the text in the Egyptian writing! – including the fragment from Bucharest, which he accompanied with a facsimile. The 1980s found the artifact in the basement of the Macca House, the historical headquarters of the “Vasile Pârvan” Institute of Archaeology. Almost four decades later, by moving in 2016 the pieces of lapidarium to the lobby of its new headquarters in the Academy House, the artifact became more visible and accessible to the study. Due to the new context and, especially, thanks to the generosity of the Director of the Institute of Archaeology, Dr Eugen Nicolae, who granted me the permission to study the artifact, as well as to the agreement and support of Dr Oana Damian, Head of the National Museum of Antiquities Sector, I started working on the research. I express my deep gratitude to both of them. The present study makes an important contribution to the highlighting of this remarkable piece of unique value, by presenting the Egyptian historical‑religious context in which the sarcophagus was produced, by a more accurate dating of it, and especially by providing, for the first time in Romania and in the world, a transliteration and a translation of the inscription fragment. At the same time, during the research, we had the chance to identify two more fragments of the same sarcophagus, one in Europe, the other (the third), in Egypt, both currently in the process of publication by the undersigned and Dr Åke Engsheden from Stockholm University. From a thematic point of view, the message of the funerary inscription E(gypt) 196, incised in low relief on the basalt fragment of the 4th century BCE trapezoidal sarcophagus, whose deceased owner was PAditm, can be subsumed to the idea of the deceased’s dependence on the solar journey through the Underworld, for one’s own resurrection. This idea appears particularly pronounced in the inscriptions and representations on a corpus of massive sarcophagi, made of hard rocks during the 5th and the 4th centuries BCE. During the 30th Dynasty, monumental trapezoidal or rectangular sarcophagi were manufactured for the burials of pharaohs and private individuals, including men related to the royal family, high priesthood holders, and other exceptional people. To a large extent, the texts and scenes on these sarcophagi are taken from the so‑called Books of the Underworld, an extensive funerary corpus known mainly from the royal tombs of the New Kingdom. It is the use of these Books of the Underworld, supplemented by selected chapters from the Books of the Going Forth by Day – the so‑called Book of the Dead –, what makes this corpus of trapezoidal sarcophagi different from all other corpora of funerary objects of the time, including the predominant anthropoid sarcophagi of the Late Period. Trapezoidal sarcophagi are actually vehicles for the largest number of reproductions of the New Kingdom Books of the Underworld in which are also combined and arranged, in completely new ways, fragments of various compositions about the Underworld. With regard to the current state of research in this Egyptology sub‑field to my knowledge an important issue is the fact that the copies of the Books of the Underworld engraved on trapezoidal sarcophagi have never been translated or edited before, while some are even completely unpublished. The textual variants, as well as the unique combinations of texts from separate Books of the Underworld offer new perspectives and insights on the meaning of these often enigmatic texts. The sarcophagi of the Late Period are both representative of their time and worthy descendants of the long tradition of funerary monuments that preceded them. The theology contained in the inscriptions and the shape of the sarcophagi has its roots in the Pyramid Texts, the oldest surviving corpus of royal religious‑funerary texts that presents the journey of the solar deity, placing his night journey in either the heavenly or the chthonic realms. The fragment E 196 in the Institute of Archaeology in Bucharest seems to be part of the upper section of one of the side faces (probably the left one) of Paditem’s sarcophagus. The medium on which the text was engraved is not granite, but basalt. The inscription has a syncretic eclectic character, specific to type IV sarcophagi according to the criteria established by Dr Colleen Manassa (see above footnote 61). Also, the type of sarcophagus, rectangular / trapezoidal, most likely belongs to the same eclectic‑syncretic type IV, based on the pattern of Tjaihorpata’s sarcophagus. The inscription contains variants of religious‑funerary texts consecrated previously in the New Kingdom and later and adapted in the Late Period, of which the Litany of the Sun is predominant (columns 4–26). With respect to the names of Ra’s forms / manifestations, we identified the following names of the divine forms / manifestations (see above footnote 64): xpri (Address 2), ra‑itni (Address 4), sxm‑Hr (Address 6), nik‑Dw‑m‑mwt‑yw (Address 8), sHD‑XAwt (Address 10), xpri (Address 12), tfnwt (Address 14), nwt (Address 16), nbt‑Hwt (Address 18), nww (Nwn) (Address 20), HwAAyty (Address 22). During the research and investigations we conducted on the piece E 196, we came across the bibliographic source Patriarchate of Alexandria 2006–2016, Patriarchate of Alexandria, 2016, with texts by Georgios Mylonas, Vassilis Chrysikopoulos and Antonis Bekiaris. In this paper, Dr Vassilis Chrysikopoulos, an Egyptologist and archaeologist from the Acropolis Museum, briefly mentions on pages 72–73 a fragment with an inscription from the sarcophagus of the priest Padiatem in the Alexandria Museum, and also presents two photographs. Based on the photographs and the namesake of the characters from fragment E 196 and from that in Alexandria Museum, we could conclude that it is the same owner, and according to the arrangement and structure of the text, the inscription fragment in Alexandria is a continuation in the upper right section of the same sarcophagus of the same ritual praise formulas from the Litany of Re, which are also present on the fragment in the “Vasile Pârvan” Institute of Archaeology. Basically, the columns with addresses to the manifestations of Re starting on piece E 196 continue on the fragment in Alexandria. We noticed a discrepancy in the two inscriptions, in the manner of writing of the Litany of Re, which could indicate another handwriting (it is known that the spelling monuments was generally the work of several scribes). However, we must specify that we did not have access to the fragment in Alexandria in its physical form, but based on the available photographs only. On the occasion of the 12th edition of the International Congress of Egyptologists held in Cairo on November 3rd–8th, 2019, we have been pleasantly surprised to find out, from the presentation of our distinguished and renowned fellow Dr Åke Engsheden, from the Stockholm University, that he identified another fragment of the same sarcophagus, which he has in publication. This fragment is located in the Medelhavsmuseet in Stockholm and consists mainly of figures and a few small fragments from Litany of Re and from the Chapter 72 of the Book of the Dead. At this moment, one can draw stage conclusions only, as more accurate dating requiring a set of various investigations, ranging from comparative grammatical, lexicographical and epigraphic analysis, to those using physico‑chemical methods of materials investigations. Yet, compared to 1902, when Gr.G. Tocilescu presented for the first time this sarcophagus fragment, currently, due to the evolution of Egyptological research, we can provide the full and strict transliteration and translation of the fragment of the inscription on the piece E 196, with clarifications regarding the types of inscription, the formulas, and the names of the deities. Most important, however, is the fact that this piece, which for many decades has gone more or less unnoticed in the basement of the Macca House in Bucharest, can now be presented to the public for the first time, thanks to this study, providing transliteration and translation of the inscription. In addition, the chance to discover two more fragments of the same monument, thanks to fellow Egyptologists from Sweden and Greece, makes it possible to begin the reconstruction of a unique object in the ancient Egyptian funerary culture, about which we will have much to say. GABRIELA FILIP, Roman gemstones in medieval and modern context Full text Abstract Show more ROMAN GEMSTONES IN MEDIEVAL AND MODERN CONTEXT A special discussion can be made about the use of Roman engraved stones during the Middle Ages and Modern era. They were most often discovered by chance, especially as a result of agricultural work. Being sometimes embedded in rings made of precious metals, they were even more valuable. The main utility of Roman gemstones in the Middle Ages and in the Modern era was generated by the presence of symbols and representations on their surface. This aspect allowed the use of Roman gems for the production of rings in the medieval period, some of which with sealing value. The paper presents some examples which attest the use of Roman gemstones in the Middle Ages and in the Modern era. The first situation of this kind is encountered in 1577, when Dobromir, a high official of Craiova at that time, used a sealing ring with a gemstone decorated with a representation of a female head in profile (fig. 1). The case of Tudor Vladimirescu’s ring, which was adorned with a Roman gemstone, is also notorious for its use as a seal (fig. 2). Other contexts for the use of Roman gemstones as seals in the Middle Ages were documented by archaeological excavations. In the inventory of two tombs located at the church from Retevoiești, Argeș County, rings made in the manner of the 15th century were discovered. In the oval‑shaped frame can be distinguished a Roman gemstone carved in a two‑tone semiprecious stone (fig. 3) and a Roman gemstone, oval in shape, made of red carnelian (fig. 4). Archaeological excavations carried out in 1987 at Tutana Monastery, Argeș County, provided interesting information on the dating and plan of the church of the monastic settlement. On this occasion, six medieval tombs were discovered inside the church. The one that attracts attention is the tomb no. 4, the only one that presented in its inventory a ring made of gold, adorned with a Roman gemstone (fig. 5). At the Church Valea, Argeș County, in two 16th century tombs, gold rings with Roman gemstones were discovered (fig. 6–7).The medieval cemetery near the village of Aluniș, Căpreni commune, Gorj County, provided three rings adorned with Roman gemstones, one made of gold (fig. 8), one made of silver (fig. 9), and one made of bronze (fig. 10). Some documents from the 19th century are attesting the reutilisation of the Roman gemstones, especially as seal ring jewellery. In 1806, Maria, Logofeteasa (overseer’s wife) from Romanați, wrote, on the dowry sheet of her niece Safta, a gold ring with an antique (fig. 11). The mention is very explicit, as a result, we are definitely dealing with a Roman gemstone. In 1867, a letter was sent from Turnu Severin, by a certain I. Ipceanu to Stan Paliu from Corlate. The letter was sealed with a mark printed in red wax, which was made with a Roman gemstone (fig. 12–13). I have listed above only some explicit cases when prominent figures or simple individuals used, during the Middle Ages and the Modern era, Roman gemstones to seal correspondence or other documents. One case of cooperation between geneticists and archaeologists, by no means an isolated one, focused on placing a few individuals in an ethnic landscape, ignores the best understandings of ethnic phenomena existing in their disciplines and shows that the common ground necessary for any interdisciplinary pursuit is taken from politicized common knowledge. Such cooperation provides answers to old questions, instead of generating new ways of producing and examining evidence. LETIȚIA COSNEAN NISTOR, The Bethlen noble residence from Criș (Mureș county) in the Historical Monuments Direction Archive Full text Abstract Show more THE BETHLEN NOBLE RESIDENCE FROM CRIȘ (MUREȘ COUNTY) IN THE HISTORICAL MONUMENTS DIRECTION ARCHIVE The Bethlen residence from Criș (hu. Keresd, germ. Kreisch), built over several stages broadly between the fifteenth and late seventeenth century is considered to be one of the most emblematic buildings of the Transylvanian Renaissance. Thus, a vivid interest in its research manifested continuously starting from the nineteenth century onwards, with minor progress though in understanding the relative chronology of its many architectural components: in the western part a medieval donjon attached to a rectangular two‑stories building, with a loggia extending in its front, longer than the building itself (!); an octagonal tower built in the north‑eastern corner of the precinct, with buildings developed on both the northern and the eastern sides of an irregular rectangular‑shaped enceinte. The corners of the precinct have old‑Italian‑shaped towers, inspired by the early‑modern fortifications of the citadels. The complex suffered major damages starting with the agrarian reforms from 1945, and later with the confiscation of all private estates, which dramatically impacted the elites’ architectural heritages all over Romania. From this period onwards until the late 1970s the buildings have functioned as deposits for agricultural products and machines, a kindergarten with a canteen, and offices belonging to the former Communist agricultural cooperative, which became the owner and the true beneficiary of these buildings. Since 1951, the professionals started to report the danger of destroying this important monument (listed as a historical monument of Romania since 1955) and tried to force the removal of the agricultural cooperative from its possession (using both threat articles in the major propaganda newspapers, but also by starting a lawsuit). Moreover, from 1964 onward the Historical Monuments Direction (Direcția Monumentelor Istorice, hence DMI) from Bucharest became actively involved in the preservation of the Bethlen castle in Criș. The archive of this institution (nowadays part of the National Institute of Heritage archive) preserves impressive documentation, covering almost four decades of continuous monitoring of the monument (over 18 files, with thousands of field reports, projects of conservation, architectural surveys, and a consistent photo collection). The actions were managed on two levels: firstly, the planning of urgent protections actions with a further ample and systematic restoration project, and secondly the negotiation of a compatible function, which would assure a sustainable use in the future. Unfortunately, in 1977 all the actions have been abruptly stopped, as the institution itself had been dissolved overnight due to a political, authoritarian decision, leaving the restoration unfinished. But more, from now on, until the 1990s, the abandoned castle has been the victim of robbery and vandalism, with parts of the castle collapsing and vegetation invading the surroundings (figs. 5a‑c). The change of the political regime in 1989 brought the re‑establishment of the Historical Monuments Direction, the Bethlen castle from Criș being re‑included in the National Restoration Investment Plan starting with 1992. The re‑evaluation of the current state of preservation brought, normally, changes and adaptation of the conservation projects. Nevertheless, the same destiny, of an unexpected stop in the actual works of restorations happened in 1999, when the castle was subject of the Bethlen heirs reclaim. The damages and the important loss of original material, with its subsequent historical information, of the castle over these turbulent decades have been easily interpreted in the recent literature as the incompetence of “Romanian specialists from Bucharest”, unable to properly understand and protect the Hungarian heritage from Transylvania. The documentation of the research (partly published) and the restoration projects preserved in the DMI Archive reveal a different situation. The present article presents a chronological synthesis of the research and conservation interventions conducted under the patronage of the Direction of Historical Monuments. The information is valuable not only for the help of demystifying the history of research in the case of this monument but also for notifying on the rich content of the archive. I mention here the most important documents in the architectural history of the monument: three archaeological reports – with unedited graphical recordings, a photo collection covering the period of 1951–1999, and a corpus of four different architectural surveys, recording in detail the architecture and the decoration of the monument. ANDREI MĂGUREANU, ADINA BORONEANȚ, DESPINA MĂGUREANU, MEDA TODERAȘ, The reidentification of a monument in Bucharest: the Chapel of the Știrbey Palace on Calea Victoriei Full text Abstract Show more THE REIDENTIFICATION OF A MONUMENT IN BUCHAREST: THE CHAPEL OF THE STIRBEY PALACE ON CALEA VICTORIEI The present study aims to bring to public attention one of the lost but not forgotten monument of Bucharest, the chapel of the Știrbey Palace. Limited rescue excavations prompted an incursion in the history of the palace and its chapel, documented by archive documents and earlier publications, as well as aerial photographs and cartographic sources. Although covering only 40 sqm the excavations, with the help of the mentioned above sources, made possible the re‑identification of the foundations of the chapel and its earliest phase. Constructive differences were noted between the foundation walls of the chapel and the northernmost wall. The latter appeared on the 1983 plan, which is also backed by the characteristics of the bricks used (of 8 mm thick) specific to constructions erected at the end of the 19th century. Compared to the northernmost wall, the foundations walls of the chapel appear earlier, with smaller bricks of 4.5–5 mm thickness only. The mortar used is also different. The authors thus suggest the existence of two construction phases: an initial one contemporary to the building of the palace (1833–1836) when smaller and thinner bricks were employed, and a later one, contemporary to the reconfiguration/reconsolidation of 1882 when a semicircular construction (the stables) was added to the main building towards the north. By comparing the foundations uncovered by the archaeological excavations and those mapped in the archival documents, certain errors were noted on the 1895 and 1911 plans regarding the palace and the additional buildings (see also the plan of the southern wings erroneously reproduced in the 1974 plan). During its most recent period the chapel was used as technical room of the Museum of Ceramic and Glass, and was demolished during the peak years of the communist regime. Still, the memory of the chapel of the Știrbey Palace lingers on, as part of the former urban tissue of Bucharest, preserved by topographic archives, memorialist and archaeological publications. The piece belongs to the category of daggers with prominent midrib and was found on a hill, at the altitude of 682 m, most likely representing an intentional deposition. The typology, chronology and chorology of this type of dagger are briefly mentioned, but also the possible meanings of this item in the context of Early Bronze Age at the Lower Danube. It is a graffito on a ceramic fragment, on which one can read without any difficulty two names: Billaios and Pythogenes. If the last name is a common one, the former is seldom attested in Archaic onomastic, but well known thanks to the homonymous river name from Bithynia. Several analogies point rather to its Ionian origin, which is remarkable if we consider the alphabet. The pronounced musculature and the posture of the two figures, one standing, the other half‑kneeling, are arguments for the identifications of one of Herakles’ deeds: the fight with Geryon. Related to this, the article resumes the discussion on other two reliefs from Histria with the depiction of Herakles, on which are identified the scenes of the Keryneian hind’ and the Stymphalian birds’ fights. These present different traces of workmanship, which indicates that they belong to different reliefs. Most probably they used to decorate small monuments of Roman period (2nd–3rd centuries BC). IOAN FEDOR PASCU, Die Kirche des dominikanischen Klosters in Schäßburg. Archäologische und historische Beiträge Full text Abstract Show more DIE KIRCHE DES DOMINIKANISCHEN KLOSTERS IN SCHÄßBURG. ARCHÄOLOGISCHE UND HISTORISCHE BEITRÄGE Fast ein Jahrhundert nach Beendigung der letzten Arbeiten an der Schäßburger Klosterkirche, wird diese nun wieder restauriert. Die ersten Begründungsstudien wurden jedoch 2005 durchgeführt, als Angel Istrate die erste archäologische Untersuchung des Denkmals unternahm. Diese vier Untersuchungen (S.1‑4), wurden an der Nordseite (in der Nähe des ersten Pfeilers im Osten ‑ S.1); an dem Fundament des Strebebogens im Osten (in Richtung Schiff ‑ S.2); auf der Südseite an der Kreuzung zwischen Chor und Kirchenschiff (S.3) und im Nordosten an der Kreuzung zwischen Sakristei und Apsis (S.4); durchgeführt. Alle Untersuchungen beziehen sich auf den von dem Projektanten an der westlichen Schwelle der Kirche errichteten Vagris. Zusätzlich zu den Beobachtungen zur Stratigraphie des Bodens, welche verschiedene Zusammenhänge zwischen dessen Planimetrie, den Stadien und Bauphasen des Denkmals hervorhoben (Grundebenen, Bauarbeiten, Reparaturen und Restaurierungen, Ruinen, Fundamente, Höhenanfänge und Mauerwerkstechniken). Archäologische Forschungen haben auch eine anliegende Nekropole hervorgehoben, in der ‑ überraschenderweise oder nicht ‑ ein anthropomorphes Grab entdeckt wurde, das in hohem Maße zu der Datierung des Zeitpunktes der Ortsbesiedlung, zur generischen Herkunft der königlichen Gäste und zur Gründung der dominikanischen Klostersiedlung in Schäßburg beiträgt. Nach mehrjähriger Unterbrechung hat die evangelische Kirche A.B. Schäßburg 2020 die Konsolidierung, Restaurierung und Verbesserung der Klosterkirche wieder aufgenommen, weswegen am Äußeren 4 weitere Untersuchungen, davon drei an den Fundamenten der Strebebögen im Süden und eine an dem Fundament der im Norden liegenden Sakristei angefordert wurden. ARCHÄOLOGIE. Die archäologischen Forschungen im Juni 2020 (S.5‑8) hatten genau definierte Ziele: das Untersuchen eines Risses in dem Keller, welcher durch das Mauerwerk vom Gesims bis unter das Bodenniveau auf der Nordseite der Sakristei (S.6) abfällt, sowie das Studium der drei Fundamente der Bögen im Süden (S.6‑8), wo jeder anders und zu einer anderen Zeit gebaut zu sein scheint. Die für beide Kampagnen relevante Stratigraphie zeigt einen lebenden Boden (kulturell unberührt), aus einem felsigen, sandigen, harten und gelblichen Sandstein, der Teil des natürlichen Kerns des Burgberges ist, über den verschiedene Bodenebenen aufgesetzt wurden, welche auf Fundationsgraben, Anfänge von Aufbauten, Bestattungshorizonte oder verschiedene Eingriffe in den Bau und die Restaurierung der Klosterkirche von ihrer Erbauung bis heute hinweisen. ARCHÄOLOGIE UND GESCHICHTE. Die Dominikanerabtei zu Schäßburg und die der Heiligen Jungfrau geweihte Klosterkirche wurden unmittelbar nach der großen tatarisch‑mongolischen Verwüstung von 1241 gegründet und bestanden spätestens bis zur zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts, als 1570 noch Spenden an katholische Mönche und Nonnen des herrschenden und franziskanischen Ordens der Stadt gemacht wurden. In der Region war die lutherische Reformation jedoch seit 1524, dank des Meisters Simion von Apold im Gange, und wird nach 1550 tief verwurzelt sein. Doch während ihres fast acht Jahrhundertlangen Bestehens, hat die Klosterkirche mit Sicherheit mehrere Bauetappen durchlaufen. Ihre gotischen Etappen, d.h. Gründung, Erweiterung und Einrichtung, sind direkt mit den Privilegien, Freiheiten und den Spenden aus dem 13. Jahrhundert bis zum Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts verbunden. 1.In der frühgotischen Phase (ab der zweiten Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts) existierte eine kleine Hallenkirche, von der nichts oder fast nichts erhalten blieb. Es kann jedoch angenommen werden, dass die Kirche, die nach der großen tatarisch‑mongolischen Einfall errichtet wurde, eine etwas andere, genauer von Ost nach West ausgerichtete Achse aufwies als die Jetzige. 2. Mit dem steigenden seiner Einkommen, tritt das Dominikanerkloster Schäßburg in den zweiten bedeutenden Bau‑ und Expansionsabschnitt gegen Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts ein, als auch die Kirche ungefähr auf ihre gegenwärtige Größe umgebaut wurde. Diese neue Bauphase kann dem Zeitraum 1483–1515 zugeordnet werden. 3. Während des dritten Viertels des 16. Jahrhunderts (mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit zwischen 1555 und 1575) wird das Kloster von der örtlichen lutherischen Gemeinde säkularisiert, die Kirche der Heiligen Jungfrau wird zum Hauptgebetsort der Schäßburger Sachsen (die somit nicht mehr bis zur Bergkirche hinaufsteigen mussten), während alle ihre Nebengebäude (Schlafräume, Refektorium, Bibliothek und Skriptorium, Studienräume der Schule und andere) am Ende größtenteils die Magistratur und die örtliche Schule beherbergen werden. 4. Nach dem beenden der Bauarbeiten von 1515 und bis nach dem großen Brand von 1676 sind keine neuen Änderungen an der Klosterkirche Urkundlich belegt. Aber das Fehlen ihrer Erwähnung, bedeutet nicht unbedingt auch das Fehlen dieser, – zumal in dieser Zeitspanne 10 Erdbeben erwähnt werden. Es besteht kein Zweifel, dass alle, oder zumindest einige davon, die Struktur der Dominikanerkirche beeinflusst haben, zumal ihr Mauerwerk kein einheitliches und kontinuierliches, sondern ein in Ebene und Höhe, durch Erweiterungen, Ergänzungen und Übererhöhungen auf einem vertikal systematisierten Grund entsprechend den natürlichen Hängen, welche je nach den Möglichkeiten und Konjunkturbedürfnissen gefunden und neu ausgelegt wurden – ein evolutionäres ist. Es kann durchaus sein, dass zumindest das Fundament des östlichen Bogens gerade in dieser Zeit als innovative Lösung errichtet wurde, durch die nicht die Kirchenmauer auf einer Stütze ruht, sondern der Strebebogen sein Wirkungsvermögen zur Unterstützung des „Mutter“‑Baus, also der Klosterkirche, auslädt. Die Abweichung der Fundamentsaxe von der Bauhöhe kann jedoch entweder auf die Wiederverwendung eines älteren Bauwerks oder auf eine Rekonstruktion des Bogens in einer späteren Periode, möglicherweise nach dem großen Brand von 1676 hinweisen. Auch während dieser Zeit, für etwa ein Jahrhundert, kann man wieder über die Möglichkeit der Errichtung von parasitären Gebäuden mit einem unbestimmten Zweck schließen, welche aber dazu beigetragen haben, die südliche Seite der Kirche zu festigen 5. Ein äußerst schmerzhafter Moment der Ortsgeschichte, aber auch ein wichtiger Bezugspunkt für Schäßburgs spätere Entwicklung (durch Schäden, Wiederherstellung, Regulierung und dergleichen) war die schreckliche Katastrophe vom 30. April 1676, nach der in nur 6 Stunden zwei Drittel der Stadt von Flammen derartig verschlungen wurden, dass „wer dieses Feuer gesehen hat, unausweichlich glauben musste, dass das Ende der Welt gekommen war“. Bei den Ausgrabungen der archäologischen Kampagne 2020 wurden die Spuren dieses großen Brandes in der Konsistenz der archäologischen Schichten deutlich bekräftigt, was somit auch im Terrain das besonders Große Ausmaß der Schäden bestätigt. Aber wenn die Flammen das gesamte Dach der Dominikanerkirche zerstörten, wirkten sie durch ihre Hitzeausstrahlung, auch ‑ zumindest indirekt, auf die Struktur der umliegenden Mauern. Wenn also der Bogen im Osten mit den nach 1515 aufgezeichneten Erdbeben in Verbindung gebracht werden könnte, muss der mittlere Bogen (mit einem Fundament, welches vollständig aus Ziegeln gebaut wurde) in direkte Verbindung mit den Reparaturen vom 1677‑1678 gestellt werden. Anderseits beschäftigten sich in dieser Barockphase drei ausländische Handwerker mit der Erneuerung des Daches um das Dach, das eine Doppelrahmung erhielt, durch die alle Kräfte auf die Außenwände übertragen werden ‑ ein weiteres ernsthaftes Argument für die Bedeutung der ersten zwei Bögen, welche beide den Druckkräften der neuen Rahmung entgegenwirken sollten. 6. Nach den Eingriffen in den Jahren unmittelbar nach dem großen Brand und bis zum Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts, als das Kircheninnere bemalt wurde, gibt es keine Berichte über andere Arbeiten, die innerhalb oder außerhalb der Dominikanerkirche in Schäßburg durchgeführt wurden, obwohl es bis zur Zwischenkriegszeit noch vier Erdbeben gab. 7. 1886 wurden in Vorbereitung auf die Hommage an das „ungarische Jahrtausend“ alle Klostergebäude mit Ausnahme der Kirche abgerissen, an ihrer Stelle wurde der heutige Komitats‑Palast der Großen Kokel errichtet. Der Korridor auf der Nordseite des Schiffes blieb jedoch unberührt und gilt seitdem als Teil des Sakralbaues. 8. In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts werden die parasitären Gebäude auf der Südseite der Kirche, einschließlich des ehemaligen Hauptquartiers der Stadtpolizei, abgerissen, der Grund erhielt die Form eines Platzes, damals „Bischof Teutsch Platz“ (heute Museumsplatz), in Erinnerung an den aus Schäßburg stammenden evangelischen Bischof Georg Daniel Teutsch (1817‑1893) genannt. Auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite befand sich die Klosterkirche 1893 in einem fortgeschrittenen Zustand des Verfalls, was zur Renovierung der Fassaden führte, einschließlich des Abrisses der beiden Vorbauten, welche die Eingänge von Osten und Westen schützten. Doch das Wichtigste fotografische Zeugnis zeigt, dass 1893 der westliche Strebebogen noch nicht errichtet war, wobei der stützende Zweck für den südwestlichen Teil der Kirche von dem Polizeigebäude geboten wurde. Zwei Jahre später, 1895, anlässlich der damaligen Renovierungen, also nach dem Abriss der ehemaligen Stadtpolizei, ist dieser Bogen als Gegenschubpunkt errichtet und vollendet worden und übernahm somit die gesamte Festigung der Südseite der Klosterkirche. 9. Bis zu den archäologischen Ausgrabungen im Jahr 2005 und der 2020 begonnenen Renovierung fanden die letzten großen Arbeiten 1928‑1929 statt, als Eingriffe an dem Bau durchgeführt wurden, und Betonbänder und Stützen zur Verknüpfung Stärkung oder Befestigung des historischen Mauerwerks eingefügt wurden. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt wurden die alten Holzbalkone abgetragen und durch die heutigen Mauerbalkone mit bemaltem Holzgeländer ersetzt. Zu dieser Zeit wurde auch die Galerie, welche die Seitenbalkone verband und die Kirche vor dem Triumphbogen überquerte, abgetragen. Dieses wurde auch in einer Votivinschrift auf dem Gewölbe neben der Orgel vermerkt: „Dies Gotteshaus, Der Väter Erde, Es ward gefestigt und erneut, Daß unser Volk nicht verderbe, Vertrau´nd auf Gott, in schwerer Zeit! 1928‑1929”.	193

Tanged daggers from the collection of the Lower Danube Museum, Călăraşi Full text Abstract Show more TANGED DAGGERS FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE LOWER DANUBE MUSEUM CĂLĂRAŞI The author considers several Bronze Age tanged daggers from the collection of the Lower Danube Museum, discovered by chance in various places from Călărași County. The first is a dagger from Vâlcelele with a rhomboid guard, having good analogies in the north‑Pontic area in Srubnaya and early Sabatinovka contexts. It is the only known dagger of this type from the west‑Pontic area to date, being in connection with the Coslogeni‑type discoveries from the Lower Danube. Other three daggers found at Grădiştea, Roseţi and Coslogeni are typologically earlier, dated during the second half of the 3rd millennium – first half of the 2nd millennium BC. Their context (chance finds/single depositions) differs from that of the typologically similar items from the Carpatho‑Danubian and north‑Pontic areas, usually found in settlements, or as grave‑goods. Therefore, a transmission and use of the three daggers until the late Bronze Age in the communities with Coslogeni‑type ceramics can be assumed, which would also explain their different context. The piece was made of bronze with a low level of tin (2.46%). The ore used for the casting of the piece contains a significant amount of impurities, over 3.5%, of which antimony holds a higher percentage (1.89%). The examination of the artefact by X‑ray CT revealed the quality of the casting, the areas with increased porosity and allowed for the exact determination of the shape of the socket. ADRIAN IONIȚĂ, ALEXANDRU SIMON, AL-WA – On grave 10 in the princely Saint-Nicholas Church in Curtea de Argeş (one hundred years since its discovery Full text Abstract Show more AL WA – ON GRAVE 10 IN THE PRINCELY SAINT‑NICHOLAS CHURCH IN CURTEA DE ARGEŞ (ONE HUNDRED YEARS SINCE ITS DISCOVERY) The article constitutes an scholarly addenda to the synthesis AL WA: Prinţul Negru al Vlahiei şi vremurile sale [AL WA: The Black Prince of Vlachia and his Times] (Cluj‑Napoca, 2017). Based on the new information at hand, two of the three authors (i.e. the archaeologist and the historian) of the book focus on previously neglected or unnoticed aspects, with emphasis on the stratigraphy of the so‑called Grave 10 in the Princely Saint Nicholas Church in Curtea de Argeş (discovered a century ago, in 1920), and on the part of his funeral inventory. The paper also constitutes a rebuttal of the unsubstantiated critics voiced against the main topic of the book: the identity of the monarchic figure in Grave 10, a voivode named Alexander (apparently not Nicholas‑Alexander, but an elder brother). We recall that Grave 10 was the only burial with an – intact – preserved sarcophagus in the entire church, with furthermore a sumptuous funeral inventory. Consequently, since the Interwar period, the highly reasonable possibility was raised that the grave belonged to an earlier church, built prior to the 1350s (in fact prior to 1300, as revealed already by the new archaeological researches at the end of the 1960s). Paradoxically, these critics have managed only to further strengthen the conclusions they attempted to contradict. For instance, the correct identification of a Roman matron (from the imperial family) on the main ring of the deceased in Grave 10, as well as the technical observation, impossible earlier on, that the controversial inscription AL WA/VA on this ring was carved from the very beginning (not added at a later stage) demonstrate that the ring was more than justly deemed a “ring of investiture”. The “ring of investiture” was issued by the Papacy most likely, under Pope Clement VI (and not by the royal Hungarian crown), for a ruler of Wallachia who stood in union with the Church of Rome, at Avignon at that time (possibly also in terms of – Latin – rite), as eloquently indicated by other devotional ring of the deceased, a ring that the critics however failed to mention. This unwanted in fact outcome (for those very critics) is further proof of the bias on which the said critics were founded. Further, needed, researches may therefore have a saner ground to build on, for several sources and analysis are still needed in order to clarify the manifold questions that surround the genesis of medieval Wallachia and in particular the princely necropolis in Curtea de Argeş. Only the bows of the fibulae were preserved, composed of a bronze shell over an iron core. The first belongs to the type with knobbed bow and the other to the type with ribbed bow. Both fibulae were published by Tiberiu Bader in the volume concerning the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age fibulae in Romania, and can be dated in the 8th‑7th centuries BC. In this article, the two fibulae were examined through non‑invasive methods: X‑ray fluorescence and X‑ray computed tomography. The elemental composition of the two fibulae determined using XRF showed that the iron rod was covered with a shell made of copper‑tin alloy also containing a higher level of lead. The images provided by X‑ray computed tomography yielded information on the structure of the fibulae, the dimensions, aspect and state of preservation of the components and the way in which they were manufactured. Both fibulae were most likely manufactured through lost‑wax casting. Another important observation was made regarding the repair of one of the fibulae. For this, bronze with a low content of tin and also a low level of lead was used. They fully attest the use of the Ionian alphabet in the settlements from the territory of Histria during that period and, moreover, the second hand use of these recipients. They are mostly simple inscriptions, one or two letters, very rare bearing a more complex text. An exceptional inscription is a graffito mentioning the vase painter Sakonides, who was active at Athens in the third quarter of the 6th century B.C. THE CASE OF THE 10TH CENTURY FUNERARY SITE IN CLUJ‑NAPOCA ‒ ZÁPOLYA STREET The archaeological site known in the literature as Zápolya Street (sometimes Dostoievski Street, the present‑day General Traian Moşoiu Street) is located ca. 1430 m SE of the present‑day city centre, on the northern edge of the third terrace of River Someş, also known as Pietroasa inferioară. As this is one of the most researched funerary sites of the era in the Transylvanian Basin, it benefits from numerous more or less detailed analyses. The combined analyses point to the wide variability in the dating of each grave and the danger of drawing pertinent and clear conclusions regarding the period when this/these micro‑communities settled in the area. The combined data of the burials have revealed no dating earlier than 925/930 and no dating later than 970/980. As no data are available on whether the individuals in question had been born here (Cluj‑Napoca) or elsewhere, on when they arrived in the area of Cluj‑Napoca, or of how much time they spent there, the issue must remain open until new research on the matter! The funerary site in Cluj‑Napoca ‒ Zápolya Street was most likely already in use (see the dating of grave no. 6) during the first half of the 10th century. This also means that the process of conquest and immigration of the newcomers reached the basin of Someșul Mic rather early. Nevertheless, the nature of the conquest, as in the case of all nomad groups, must not be viewed from a territorialistic perspective; the main goal of any nomad power structure was to control the natural resources (especially the salt‑rich areas in the case of Transylvanian Basin), the population, and the pastures, facilitated by the road networks built during the Roman time. Prințul Negru al Vlahiei și vremurile sale, published in 2017. According to this study, the tomb no. 10 – found by Virgil Drăghiceanu in 1920 – from the Princely Church in Curtea de Argeş is assigned to the first constructed church (Argeş I), while the buried person is identified with Alexander Wayuoda, “one of the unnamed sons of Basarab I”. These hypotheses are based on some signs – read as AL VA/WA – that are visible on one of the ring shoulders found in the mentioned tomb. As a result of our investigations, we came to different conclusions, namely: the tomb no. 10 belongs to the church Argeş II, while the signs placed on the ring’s shoulder weren’t inscribed after its execution, representing, in fact, the goldsmith’s hallmark, that cannot ever be mistaken with the name and the social position of the ring bearer. MALA-MARIA STAVRESCU-BEDIVAN, The study of the mammals osteological remains discovered in the archaeological site Adamclisi – Eastern Plateau (2002) Full text Abstract Show more THE STUDY OF THE MAMMALS OSTEOLOGICAL REMAINS DISCOVERED IN THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE ADAMCLISI – EASTERN PLATEAU (2002) During the archaeological digging campaign from Adamclisi – Eastern Plateau, in the summer of 2002, there were discovered 688 osteological remains of mammals, into a pit attributed to the Coslogeni culture. There were identified seven species: Equus caballus (horse), Bos taurus (cattle), Ovis aries (sheep), Capra hircus (goat), Sus domesticus (pig), Canis familiaris (dog), Cervus elaphus (red deer). It was also added the category of ovicaprines (Ovis/Capra). The minimum number of individuals is 21; only one of them is wild. The osteological material is very fragmented and presents anthropic intervention marks (flesh removal traces, disjointing, burning, working/processing) and non anthropic traces (rodent / carnivorous teeth impressions, physical action of plants roots). RESULTS OF MICROSCOPIC AND X‑RAY DIFFRACTION ANALYSES OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL FROM THE ROMAN AQUEDUCT The purpose of our research is, on the one hand, to continue the study of Roman aqueducts in the area of the city of Tropaeum Traiani, started by Alexandru Simion Ştefan, and, on the other hand, to document, within a radius of 25 km around the city, all known points (or not) containing traces of the Roman and Roman‑Byzantine period. The methods used are varied: drilling, GPS data collection, archaeological surveys, soil analysis, water, using satellite photos. Most of the archaeological points of interest in the territory of the city of Tropaeum Traiani, as well as the watercourses or the surrounding settlements are already known. Dr. Linda Ellis (San Francisco State University) coordinates field research, including conducting archaeological surveys. Dr. John Marshall, a geologist at SETI Institute (NASA) in Palo Alto, California, deals with microscopic analysis and interpretation of their results. Dr. Don L. Williamson of the Colorado School of Mines analyzes X‑ray samples of construction materials used for aqueducts. In 2004 and 2005 two aqueducts were investigated, the first on a length of 1 m and the second on 5 m. The archaeological surveys aimed to establish the construction technique, the depth and the direction of aqueducts. Three samples from the walls of the canal, the size of a fist, were taken to the USA for analysis. The results of the microscopic and X‑ray analyses correspond to the already published results of the analyses of the Quaternary deposits from SE Romania. LINDA ELLIS, Hydroarchaeology and public health: results of chemical testing of water sources in the territorium of Tropaeum Traiani–Adamclisi Full text Abstract Show more HYDROARCHAEOLOGY AND PUBLIC HEALTH: RESULTS OF CHEMICAL TESTING OF WATER SOURCES IN THE TERRITORIUM OF TROPAEUM TRAIANI–ADAMCLISI As part of the research program of the territory of the roman city of Tropaeum Traiani, in 2005, water samples were taken from Abrud, Adamclisi, Cucuruz, Şipotele and Zorile, but only the first two mentioned were subjected to the analyzes. The sample from Abrud comes from the Roman aqueduct, and the one from Adamclisi from the Turkish well, where, around the surface of the place, Roman pottery appears. Water from other sources, about which there was no information that would have been used in Roman times, was not analyzed. The results of the tests performed both on site and in the laboratory, indicate very high values for water hardness, for all analyzed samples. Indeed, the area of Adamclisi, like the western Dobrudja, up to the Danube, is located on a loess level with a high percentage of carbonates (20–27%), compared to the rest of the area. The chemical analysis clearly shows that the water in the Turkish well from Adamclisi is carbonated. The water from Zorile, Abrud and Șipotele contains a relatively high level of carbonates, which is close to that admitted for consumption and household needs. It is quite possible that the relatively low level of mineral carbonates in the water sources from Şipotele and Abrud made the Romans build the aqueducts, the one from Şipotele to Tropaeum Traiani and the one from Abrud, which was going in an unknown direction. The most interesting sources of water are Zorile and Cucuruz. The latter is a village, currently abandoned, because the population was forced to move during communism, where water has the lowest level of nitrates in the chemical composition. This is due to the abandonment of the village and the lack of mechanized agriculture. The water from Zorile and Cucuruz contains the lowest level of dissolved minerals, which makes these springs the safest source in the area for drinking water. RENATA TATOMIR, Preliminary results of the research of the Egyptian antiquity collection of the “Vasile Pârvan” Institute of Archaeology in Bucharest Full text Abstract Show more PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH OF THE EGYPTIAN ANTIQUITY COLLECTION OF THE “VASILE PÂRVAN” INSTITUTE OF ARCHAEOLOGY IN BUCHAREST The “Vasile Pârvan” Institute of Archaeology in Bucharest, through its integrated sector, entitled the National Museum of Antiquities (hereinafter, the NMA), has a minor collection of 151 ancient Egyptian artefacts. Between the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century the collection was established and developed through the donations of the Romanian private collectors. The study of this collection will give a more in‑depth insight into issues such as: the stages of its formation, the interests of collectors regarding the purchase of antiquities in general and of Egyptian antiquities especially during the previously mentioned period; the types and categories of Egyptian artefacts. Broadly speaking, the artefacts can be dated to the Predynastic Period, the First Intermediate Period, the Second Intermediate Period (the Hyksos Domination), the New Kingdom (the Empire), the Third Intermediate Period, the Late Period (from the 26th Dynast onwards), the Roman Period. Most of the artefacts have a good conservation state. However, there is also a number of fragmentary pieces (statues of funerary servants, Osiris statues, statues of deities, wooden objects, amulets, mummies, lapidary pieces, a fragment of a mummy cartonnage, a mummy funerary mask), some of which have been restored in the laboratory. The artefacts are made of different materials, specific to each type and period in which they were made: wood, painted wood, rocks – limestone (alabaster), sandstone, serpentine, basalt, granite, breccia, black stone – ceramics, glazed faience, terracotta, glass paste. Regarding the typology of the artefacts, the collection includes the followings: lapidarium fragments, epigraphic and anepigraphic shabti, shawabti, ushebti mummiform statuettes, scarabs, statuettes of gods, amulets, necklaces, vases, mummies of birds and a fragment of a human mummy (a hand), Predynastic points and blades, a shabti box, a mummy mask, a fragment of a mummy cartonnage, a headrest, a fragment of a stela/cippus of Horus. Tocilescu Full text Abstract Show more LETTERS FROM DOBRUDJA TO GRIGORE G. TOCILESCU AND SOME STORIES ABOUT PEOPLE AND STONES Haphazard archaeological discoveries made on the territory of Dobrudja a century ago are related in the correspondence addressed to Grigore G. Tocilescu and to the National Museum of Antiquities. A lot of 54 unpublished letters from the Tocilescu Fund at the Library of the Romanian Academy are analysed in the present paper. These were written between 1884 and 1909 and mailed by state institutions or by private persons. Various pieces of information concerning archaeological contexts, artefacts and sites can be recovered from this correspondence. The analysed correspondence paints the atmosphere of the Romanian society at the beginning of the modern state. The degree of information and respect concerning the legislation dedicated to the cultural goods, at individual level, of the persons that enters in contact with archaeological vestiges or hear about archaeological discoveries, is illustrated. Observations can be made on the way the state institutions that are connected to the protection of the historical and archaeological monuments function. MIRCEA VICTOR ANGELESCU, Histria in the year 1917 Full text Abstract Show more HISTRIA IN THE YEAR 1917 An article, published in November 1917 by the German magazine Zentralblatt der Bauverwaltung, is presented. A plan of the region and one of the excavations undertaken for the western front of the Late Roman fortification are illustrated, for which a comparison can be made with the plans already published by Vasile Pârvan, after the first three years of research. Some important inscriptions and some sculptural and architectural pieces are also illustrated (e.g. the famous colossal head of a statue of Apollo). Apart from some inaccuracies, the article proves to be an interesting source of information on the state of research immediately after the first interruption of the excavations, following the outbreak of World War I.
